#48 Trail Blaze'N

At the age of 35 I embarked on the best mid-life crisis ever. I got my first horse. His name is Blaze. He was a bit of a rescue pony. There person I got him from told me he was 5 years old, but my bestie promptly informed me he had milk teeth and his knees weren't closed so he was either an old yearling or a young 2yr old. She picked him out for me because the yearlings in the pasture were always picking on him and she felt I needed a low man on the totem pole gelding to start with. I wasn't of her boss. Not my personality. We've been together since 2006 and we love to hit the trails together. We make a good pair. It's the best form of therapy ever, just me, my pony and God's country. There's no better way to relax and re-center. We started training for endurance riding  and joined the distance derby in 2016. I am making riding a priority rather than an infrequent reward that I allow myself. So here's to another year of growing together.

  1. Went for a ride with Mel today. She was showing me how the Bud Blanchard trail connects Millpond Park in Eatonville to Pack Forest. We didn't get too far when two runners came up behind us around a curve in the trail, so they were well hidden by a large boulder/hill. Spooked the horses, Mel came off and I almost came off. Luckily she was wearing her helmet because she hit real hard. I didn't see it but I heard it. Check out pic 3 - that helmet is cracked all the way through an if you look closely you'll see it travels from back to front too. Mel has been riding since she was 7 and she's in her early 40s, so she knows how to ride, and she wasn't on a green horse. The horse weren't being bad, and the runners didn't mean to spook the horses. Mel got up, dusted her self off, gave a short but polite trail etiquette class on how horses are prey animals and you shouldn't run up behind them but should slow down and make your presence known, explaining why. Then we met several other hikers on the way back to the trailer, and Mel gave the class again with a knod to helmet safety. Which re-assured this nurse that her mental faculties were intact. So Mel gets my hard core award for the month for doing the flying wallenda, hiking back in the cold and teaching strangers with a smile while having to pretty sore.
